用法：
首先Not only…..but (also)表示的關(guān)系是遞進(jìn), 其中also可以省略
But/but also表示的是轉(zhuǎn)折. 在but also中, ring_cheng認(rèn)為also不屬于重復(fù), 所以應(yīng)當(dāng)保留.該觀點(diǎn)尚未證實(shí).
not only ...but also表示并列，不能表示轉(zhuǎn)折，不要有先入為主的感覺認(rèn)為not only...but also必須一起出現(xiàn)。單獨(dú)出現(xiàn)but also是可能的，此時表示的是轉(zhuǎn)折。

關(guān)于not only…but also.. 的用法,我根據(jù)前人的發(fā)言并結(jié)合GMAT的思路挑出了這幾條:
1.在正常語序中: not only … but also 應(yīng)連接兩個相對稱的并列成分。例如：
Not only Mr Lin but also his son joined the Party two years ago. (連接兩個主語)
I not only play tennis but also practise shooting. (連接兩個謂語動詞)
He plays not only the piano but also the violin. (連接兩個賓語)
在正常語序中: 短語本身不可以加入其它成份，比如變成：not only...but it also...是錯誤的(因?yàn)槠茐牧似胶?。

Choice D, the best answer, correctly employs the correlative construction not only x but also y, where x and y are grammatically parallel and where both x and y (damage and destroy) apply to young plants. Choices A, (not only... and also), B (not only... as well as), and C (not only... but they also) violate the not only... but also paradigm. Moreover, B contains terms (blow... damaging) that are not parallel. In C and E, damage is used not as a verb with young plants as its direct object but as a noun receiving the action of cause; consequently, these choices fail to state explicitly that the damage is done to young plants. E also violates parallelism (not only blow... but also causing)
2. not only … but also 連接兩個主語時，謂語動詞要和與其最近的主語保持人稱和數(shù)的一致。例如：
Not only the students but also the teacher was against the plan. / Not only the teacher but also the students were against the plan.
3. not only … but also 不能用在否定句中。例如：
誤： They dont fear not only hardship but also death.
正： They fear neither hardship nor death.
正： They dont fear either hardship or death.
4. not only … but also 連接兩個分句，并且 not only 位于句首時，第一個分句中的主語和謂語要部分倒裝。例如：
Not only does the sun give us light, but also it gives us heat.
Not only did he speak English correctly, but he also speaks it fluently.
《新編英語語法》薄冰P633：Not only does he compose music, but he also play./ Not only does he have to type out the answer on a computer, but he also gets the computer to translate it into sounds.
《新編英語語法》章振邦1005：She was not only compelled to stay at home, but she was also forbidden to see her friends
英語語法大全上的例句是: Not only did they break into his office and steal his books, but they also tore up his manuscripts. 所以我個人認(rèn)為在倒裝的情況下,but also是可以被主語拆開的.
這里附上ring_cheng的觀點(diǎn):倒裝時可以在短語中插入某類成分，如：not only did sb do sth, but sb also did sth (之所以前后都加入主語，不是為了連接主語，而是為了句子的對仗工整而補(bǔ)足主語，連接的其實(shí)是主語的兩個不同的謂語動作。又因?yàn)閚ot only在句首已經(jīng)倒裝過了，所以but also用正常語序即可。依然滿足句子平衡的要求).如大全354中but also被主語+助動詞拆開:

倒裝：
“not only...but also...“是并列關(guān)聯(lián)連詞，意為”不但.....而且......“，主要用來連接兩個并列成分(如主語、謂語、表語、賓語、狀語)，也可用來連接兩個分句，所強(qiáng)調(diào)的重點(diǎn)是后面的一個。在具體使用時我們要注意以下幾點(diǎn)。
1.當(dāng)這一結(jié)構(gòu)連接的是兩個同等成分，這個關(guān)聯(lián)詞的兩部分應(yīng)分別放在所連接的兩個同等成分前面。例如：
He not only speaks English fluently but also writes English well.他不但英語說得很流利，而且寫得很好。(連接謂語)
He speaks not only English but also French.他不但會說英語，而且會說法語。(連接賓語)
2.當(dāng)它連接兩個分句時，如果not only位于句首則not only分句要用倒裝結(jié)構(gòu)，but also分句不要倒裝。例如：
Not only does he have to type out the answer on a computer, but he also gets the computer to translate it into sounds.他不僅要把答語在計算機(jī)上打了出來，而且還要讓計算機(jī)把答語變成聲音。
Not only will help be given to disabled persons to find jobs, but also medical treatment will be provided for people who need it.不僅要幫助殘疾人求職，而且要對那些需要治療的人給予治療。
3.如果not only... but also連接兩個主語，則句子不用倒裝。此時還要注意，謂語動詞在人稱和數(shù)上應(yīng)與后面一個主語保持一致。例如：
Not only he but also you are wrong.不但他錯了，你也錯了。
4.此結(jié)構(gòu)中的also有時可省略。例如：
The Great Wall was made not only of stone and earth, but of the flesh and blood of millions of men.長城不僅是用石頭和泥土筑成的，而且也是用數(shù)以百萬計的人的血肉筑成的。
Lu Xun was not only a great writer, but a great revolutionary.魯迅不僅是個偉大的作家，而且還是個偉大的革命家。
