There is no denying that people can get a lot benefits from reading classics. On the one hand, it is a good way for readers to broaden their horizon and increase their knowledge in many aspects. For instance, they can learn the society characters by reading classic literature novels about history or culture. On the other hand, it also provides a chance for them to enhance their aesthetic taste in that most of classics has a very beautiful or unique language style and arts, which gives readers more enjoyment and interest.

However, nowadays a large number of people, especially the young, are unwilling to or cannot spend their times in reading classics. There are some reasons accounting for the phenomenon and I would like to state two of them. For one thing, people are distracted by other things increasingly, which can give their more joy and fun and have no requirement in thinking, such as all kinds of entertainment activities. For another, some people think that it is no use of reading classics because these classics are outdated and useless to our society and lives.

In my opinion, it is wrong to consider classics as an outdated matter because it still has many important functions and influence on our society and our lives. Classics are a kind of treasure in a nation. Therefore, we should give enough attention to them. And I advocate that all of us should try our best to read some of them.

Since reading classics plays a significant role in developing a person's character, many people recognize the importance of reading classics, especially to young people.

However, in modern society, it seems to most people that classical literary works are both outdated and time-consuming compared with their modem counterparts like TV programs, movies, and video games. Only a few people bother to spend a lot of time reading classics. And in the market, those fashionable reading materials, which may cater to modem people's love of fashion, are taking the place of the masterpieces. One of the reasons behind the phenomenon is that there are so many other leisure activities in the modern society that young people 　　prefer these things for fun to classical literary works.

As the backbone of this society, college students should be fully aware of the importance of reading classics. Therefore, we should read those classical works our ancestors have left to us as much as possible, and advocate the importance of classics so that an increasing number of people can enjoy the pleasure and benefit from reading classics.

As we all know, books, especially the classical, present the precious accumulation of wisdom and knowledge beyond the limitation of time or space, from which we can enjoy numerous anecdotes, get to know exotic culture and tradition, experience the legendary and miraculous life of our idols and make ourselves better men day by day.

Nevertheless, people, especially the young, seem to have stored those classical books merely on the shelf for an unbelievably long time, which can be attributed to various factors. On the one hand, modern people have to cope with the quick pace and unavoidable stress of their work or life; therefore, they can hardly devote time to reading books. On the other hand, people tend to be more material-oriented involving their social status, amount of wealth or prospects of getting promotion, which eclipse the important benefits from reading classical books.

To me, it is essential for most undergraduates to read certain classical books, especially ones filled with life-long motivation and sagacious thoughts, which may not guarantee them short-term returns but will bring them far-reaching reward.
